Why Invest Internationally?
International investments are now accessible and attractive to a broad range of investors.
A popular example of an international investment product is a portfolio bond. Portfolio bonds are single premium investment products that allow you to invest in a range of assets within one 'insurance wrapper' for tax purposes. These products offer a number of advantages over other ways of investing for the medium to long term:
- a range of international life funds;
- access to collective investment funds such as unit trusts and open-ended investment companies (OEICs);
- access to deposit accounts; and
- a range of tax planning solutions.
Investing in a portfolio bond internationally can offer you specific advantages over a similar investment in the UK, for example:
Gross roll-up - international life funds held within an international portfolio bond offer tax advantages compared with UK life funds.
Control over when tax is paid - tax on investments can be delayed until you move to a lower tax bracket or a jurisdiction with a more favourable tax regime.
Tax planning - these bonds combined with a suitable trust can be a useful inheritance tax planning tool.We have an overview of how international investment might feature in an investment portfolio.
